Which beach, and when
This is a limestone coast, so most of it meets the sea as rock rather than sand. That is why the water is the colour it is, and it is also why you should bring something for your feet.
By what you want from it
Pick the beach to suit the day rather than driving to the same one out of habit. They are genuinely different places.
- For sand, Stoupa
- The only big sandy beach in Outer Mani, which is why Stoupa is busier than Kardamyli in August. Go for the day, come home for the evening.
- For ease, Ritsa at Kardamyli
- Pebbles, clear water and the village behind you. Swim, eat at the far end and stroll back.
- For small and quiet, Salio
- A few steps from Kardamyli's square, and usually nearly empty.
- For the swim you will remember, Limeni
- Less a beach than a stone harbour full of impossible blue, five minutes off the main road below Areopoli.
- For a long walk on sand, Mavrovouni
- Near Gytheio, on the other side of the peninsula, and the largest beach in the Mani.
- For a windy day, Kotronas and Kokkala
- The east coast is the sheltered side. When the west is white with chop, cross over.
The bay below the house
Kalamitsi's own beach is at the bottom of the hill. It is pebble and rock, the water is clear to a depth you will not quite believe, and on most mornings in June you will have it more or less to yourself.
It is a lovely walk down and an honest walk back up. Plenty of guests drive down and think nothing of it.
Sea shoes
Not an affectation here. On a limestone coast they are the difference between swimming and watching other people swim. Bring a pair for everyone, including the person who says they will not need them.

Is there a sandy beach near Kardamyli?
Stoupa, a short drive up the coast, has the only big sandy beach in Outer Mani. Kardamyli's own beaches, Ritsa and Salio, are pebble.
Is there a beach below Villa Helios?
Yes. Kalamitsi bay is at the bottom of the hill, a pebble and rock beach with very clear water. It is a walk down and a climb back, so most people drive.
Do you need water shoes in the Mani?
On most beaches, yes. The coast is limestone and meets the sea as rock or pebble far more often than as sand.
