The Kardamyli Festival
1 Oct – 5 Oct 2026
Literature, history and culture over a long weekend, partly at Patrick and Joan Leigh Fermor's house.
The area
Kalamitsi is the next bay south of Kardamyli, on the stretch of coast where Taygetos comes down to the sea. This is what is around you.

Ten minutes away
A real working village with a little harbour, a pebble beach at Ritsa, an old fortified quarter up the hill above the new one, and enough places to eat that one dark window never ruins an evening.
Everything in it is close. There is a cash machine, a bakery, a greengrocer and more tavernas than a village that size has any right to. If you want one base for a week on this peninsula, this is the one.
Stoupa, a short drive north, has the better sand. Kardamyli has the better evening. Go to Stoupa for the day and come back here.
Below the house
The next bay south, a short walk down the hill from us. Pebble and rock, water clear to a depth that takes a moment to accept, and usually nearly empty.
This is where Patrick Leigh Fermor built his house and lived in it for decades before leaving it to the Benaki Museum. You can visit on a scheduled tour, booked online, with the window opening a month ahead. It is about 10 minutes on foot from our gate.
If the house is any part of why you are coming, being this close to it is the whole point. The visits are short and fixed, and starting the day with a 45 minute drive is no way to arrive at one.
“Stoupa has the better sand and Kardamyli has the better evening.”
Mani and the Peloponnese, Part Three
The year
The pool is heated and the house has a heat pump throughout, which is why April and October work here and do not at most places on this coast. Those are the two loveliest months in the Mani.
October

Getting your bearings
The pin is Kalamitsi bay rather than our front door. It is a family house, so the exact directions and the gate code come with your booking, along with the bit of local knowledge that stops you taking the wrong lane in the dark.
Questions
On the hillside above Kalamitsi bay, the next bay south of Kardamyli in the Outer Mani, Messenia. It is about 10 minutes by car from Kardamyli village and about an hour from Kalamata airport.
Swimming at Ritsa, Salio and Kalamitsi, walking in the Viros gorge and up to Old Kardamyli, a scheduled tour of Patrick Leigh Fermor's house at Kalamitsi, day trips to Stoupa for sand and south to Areopoli, Diros and Cape Tainaron.
April and October are the loveliest months on this coast, and the pool at Villa Helios is heated so both work. June and September give you warm sea without the peak. July and August are hot and busy.
