Down the peninsula: Areopoli, Diros and the end of the road
South of Areopoli the peninsula turns into something else: no trees, tower houses on every ridge, and a road that runs out at the place the ancients thought was the entrance to the underworld. It is the best day you will have here, if you set off at the right hour.

The shape of the day
Leave early. Areopoli is about 90 minutes from the house and the day works best if you are there before the heat. Fill up with fuel and draw cash while you are in the town, because both get scarce further south.
Limeni is five minutes off the main road below Areopoli and is worth the detour for the swim alone. It is a stone harbour rather than a beach, and the water in it is absurd.
The caves, and whether to bother
The Diros caves are a boat trip through a flooded cave system and they are genuinely remarkable. They are also busy in season, the queue is unshaded, and the visit is on somebody else's timetable.
Go first thing or skip them without guilt. If you do go, the umbrellas and loungers on the beach in front of the cave are free, which is the best-kept small secret on this coast.
The end of the road
Cape Tainaron is the southernmost point of mainland Greece and the drive down to it is single track, unfenced and slow. From the car park it is a walk of about half an hour each way to the lighthouse, over stones, with no shade at all.
Do it at the end of the afternoon. Areopoli down to the cape and back is half a day, not an excursion you bolt on to something else.
What not to do
Do not drive into the deep south in the middle of a summer's day. There is no shade, the villages close, and you will spend four hours looking at the inside of a hot car.
Do not expect the towers to be museums. They are houses, some restored as hotels, most not, and they are more interesting for it.
Questions
What people ask us about this.
How far is Areopoli from Kardamyli?
About 90 minutes by road. The distance is short and the road goes round every inlet, so plan in hours rather than kilometres.
Are the Diros caves worth visiting?
They are remarkable, and they are busy in season with an unshaded queue. Go first thing in the morning or leave them out. The beach in front of the cave has free umbrellas and loungers.
Can you drive to Cape Tainaron?
You can drive to a car park near the end, on a slow single-track road, and then it is about half an hour on foot each way to the lighthouse over open stone with no shade.
